Principles

Design is art coming from a place of service.

Fine art inspires awe while design changes behavior. It involves a creative and systematic plan to solve a problem or achieve certain objctives. User experience design should always strive to serve the users first and foremost.

Collaboration is key.

UX is a cross-disciplinary activity best served by group idea cultivation with the common goal of delivering the best possible solution. When everyone on a team speaks a common language and is unafraid to share ideas, we can reach more innovative concepts and solutions of higher quality.

Focus on value, not technology.

In an age in which 'current technology' is constantly changing, it's important to remember that the tech is just the latest tool, but it doesn't add value unless you focus on the goal. Knowing what you want to achieve is more crucial than which tool you use to do it.

Clear visual hierarchy, clear message.

Correct utilization of hierarchy is like having a design superpower! We can highlight the most important elements as users try to achieve goals in their individual contexts so that they can scan instead of having to work at reading and remembering things.

Consistent design is intuitive design.

We humans prefer consistency by default! By ensuring that similar elements are aesthetically and functionally consistent, we can decrease users' cognitive load and create an altogether better product.

Accessibility should shape every design.

The first step toward building a usable product is to build empathy and install an inclusive design mentality. I pride myself on being a practitioner of proactive accessibility by following the current Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
